Nottingham East Midlands Airport may buy houses due to night noise
01.03.06
Homes worst affected by aircraft noise could be purchased by Nottingham East Midlands Airport. The airports expansion plans document proposes, as a last resort, buying houses suffering regular noise levels of 69 decibels or more at night, but only if the property was built before December 2003.
The public are being consulted on the airport's draft masterplan, its expansion plans document, which was launched earlier this month. One of the issues it addresses is noise levels experienced by homeowners.
In addition to buying homes, the plan also says grants for sound insulation for properties, such as double-glazing, will be increased to up to £10,000 for homes experiencing 66 decibels or more. The basic sound insulation grants for lesser affected properties will be boosted by £1000 to a maximum of £3000.
But Steve Charlish, of the Demand East Midlands Airport is Now Designated (Demand) campaign group for villagers living near the airport said: 'There are very few houses, maybe some in Kegworth, that would fall into that category.'
Consultation on the draft masterplan closes on May 14. A full copy of the plan is available at www.nottinghamema.com.
