Nottingham East Midlands gives Indian airport cargo advice
07.03.06
The Nottingham East Midlands Airport has offered to help Pune's exporters overcome problems handling cargo at the Indian city's airport.
The offer came during an interactive session organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) between officials of Nottingham East Midlands and Pune businessmen. The focus of the discussion was on establishing air-link between Pune and European markets.
William Blanchard, manager of cargo development at Nottingham East Midlands Airport, pointed out that there is a huge similarity between it and Pune airport, thus the technique and system of cargo handling could be easily installed at the Pune airport. He invited officials to visit his airport to see the system in operation.
East Midladsn is the second-largest cargo hub and biggest parcel hub in the UK. It crossed the mark of 300,000 tonne of cargo handling in 2004 and has set a target of 1 million tonne by 2010.
According to Mr Blanchard, building a well-equipped cargo handling facility was a pre-requisite. 'What a city needs for exports is basic infrastructure. So do not wait for airlines to come and start their flights. If you are ready with cargo terminal, it will automatically attract airlines to offer their services,' he said.
