07.06.06
British Airways is to offer low-cost flights from Nottingham East Midlands Airport, the airline announced yesterday. BA's regional subsidiary, BA Connect, is to offer the flights as part of its bid to re-shape to compete with budget airlines.
BA will run scheduled services from Nottingham East Midlands Airport starting with a three flights a week route to Tenerife which launches 31 October. Kevin Hatton of BA franchise GB Airways, who are to operate the flights, said the airport had an excellent catchment area and a strong market for leisure traffic.
Hatton said: 'Tenerife is literally a new direction for BA Connect services in the Midlands. Until now it has traditionally been based at Birmingham Airport and focused on business and short break destinations.'
East Midlands airport's managing director, Penny Coates, described the announcement as 'a really exciting milestone'. BA will not be basing the Airbus planes it is using for the service at the airport.
