Ryanair is to open its 18th European base at Madrid's Barajas Airport. The budget airline will invest €167.6m in three new aircraft and launch 14 new routes from the airport, serving an estimated 1 million passengers each year.
The airline will launch daily flights between Madrid and East Midlands Airport, Dublin, Eindhoven, Faro, Porto, Marseille and Paris, as well as services to Shannon, Billund, Brussels, Oslo, Bournemouth, Gothenburg and Malmo.
Ryanair announced another base in Spain last month, at Girona airport, near Barcelona. Its rival, easyJet will also open a base at Madrid Barajas for European and domestic flights in February, but few of the two airlines' routes will overlap.
