Penny Coates is the boss at Nottingham East Midlands airport and is currently getting a new 25-year business plan off the ground, but she still finds time to help at her local building society.
It is an exciting time for Coates. At the relatively young age of 42, and after a career in management spanning everything from pet foods to crisps, she says she is 'loving every single minute' of her job at Nottingham East Midlands Airport.
Over the next 10 years, the airport is expected to invest £100m in the local economy, doubling jobs and the number of flights as well as quadrupling the amount of freight carried.
Yet despite the pressure of running an airport that handles five million passengers a year, she spends a couple of days each month with her boardroom colleagues at Melton Mowbray Building Society.
Coates is one of a new breed of non-executive directors breathing fresh life and ideas into the cobwebridden boardrooms of the country's 63 building societies. She spends time each month at her local mutual, to check on its financial progress and question chief executive Gordon Wells about issues.
