Inquiry rules out 'near miss' at Nottingham East Midlands Airport

Reports that an overloaded freight plane overshot the runway and narrowly missed a town on take-off at Nottingham East Midlands Airport were unfounded, an air safety investigation has decided.
Harborough MP Edward Garnier told the House of Commons 3 weeks ago about an alleged incident involving a freight plane which had struggled to take off. The plane overshot the runway and just managed to get airborne, he told MPs, but as it struggled to maintain its height it passed over Melbourne, a village in south Derbyshire, at just 100 metres above ground-level.
After studying radar tapes and speaking to air traffic controllers, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the MP was given 'inaccurate information'. A CAA spokesman said: 'Our initial assessment of the takeoff and reports from the airport is that the aircraft did not overrun the runway and there was no reportable incident. From our point of view, the case is now closed.'
