Village near Nottingham East Midlands airport being used for free parking
24.01.06
A Derbyshire village is being turned into a noisy car park by Nottingham East Midlands airport traffic, residents say. A new shuttle service to the airport set up by bus operator Arriva has led to roads in Melbourne being clogged with parked cars.
A residents association said cars were being left in the village to avoid parking charges at the airport - a practice known as 'fly parking'. Brian Canavan, chair of the local residents association, said: 'As the holiday season gets into full swing, more people will come here and use the roads as a free car park. If they leave their cars they can save themselves £100.'
The hourly Air Link 69 service to Nottingham East Midlands Airport was launched in October and runs from before 06:00 until after midnight. Keith Myatt, communications and media relations director at Arriva, said: 'We have a monitoring team who keep inspect the service and they have found no evidence of people using Melbourne for free airport parking.'
