More routes planned for Nottingham East Midlands Airport
24.02.06
Nottingham East Midlands Airport hopes to increase the number of destinations to 200 by 2016. By then, the airport hopes people would be able to fly to every major European city, and to long-haul destinations in India, China and north America from Nottingham.
Nottingham East Midlands managing director, Penny Coates, said: 'Our vision is to develop an airport that makes the East Midlands feel proud. An airport that provides high quality jobs, contributes to the competitiveness of local businesses, promotes inward investment to the region, facilitates trade with the rest of the world and is responsive to local people's desire to travel - whether on holiday or to maintain contact with family and friends.'
Environmental campaigners, however, said they were against extra flights at the airport because it will increase pollution. Lisa Smith, from green charity Environ based in Western Park, Leicester said: 'Flying is the most polluting form of travel and we don't think it is a good idea to increase the number of flights. We would urge people to consider other forms of transport before flying.'
'The amount of fuel that is consumed and the resultant carbon dioxide emissions are immense. We would urge people to think carefully about whether they really need to fly and if it is a business trip to consider video conferencing.'
